What Is Hand Engraving?
A Traditional Jewellery Art Form
Hand engraving is one of the oldest and most respected techniques in jewellery making. Using specialised tools called gravers, designs are carefully carved directly into metal by hand.
Every line is guided by the engraver’s skill and touch, creating subtle variations and character that machines cannot replicate. Unlike laser engraving, which is computer generated and uniform, hand engraving carries the individuality of the maker and the emotion behind the piece.
This centuries old craft is often used for:
Initials and monograms
Dates
Family crests
Scrollwork and ornamental detailing
Bespoke artwork

I spent three months in Antwerp studying diamond setting and hand engraving, learning techniques that demand patience, control and years to truly master.
Hand engraving is one of the oldest traditions in jewellery making, a craft passed down through generations of jewellers for centuries.
It is a slow and patient craft. Each line is carefully cut by hand, hour after hour. Unlike laser engraving, which is done by machine, these marks are shaped by human hands.
That’s what gives it meaning. Every cut carries intention, time and care, leaving behind something more than decoration, a story held in metal.

FAQ
What is the difference between hand engraving and laser engraving?
Hand engraving is completed manually using traditional tools, creating natural character and depth. Laser engraving is machine generated and perfectly uniform.
How long does hand engraving take?
Depending on the complexity of the design, hand engraving can take several hours to complete. Every piece is individually carved by hand, meaning the process is slow, deliberate and highly detailed.
For example, Ben spent over six hours hand engraving our Beatrice Band, from the initial design layout through to the completed intricate engraving work. The time invested into each piece is what gives hand engraving its unique character, depth and craftsmanship.
Can you engrave existing jewellery?
In many cases yes. We recommend visiting us in-store so we can assess the piece and discuss options.
Can I create a custom engraving design?
Absolutely. We can work with initials, handwriting, symbols, scrollwork and bespoke artwork.
Is hand engraving available on all jewellery?
Hand engraving can be incorporated into most bespoke creations and selected existing designs.
